Scientists are uncovering evidence that short periods of fasting, if properly controlled, could achieve a number of health benefits, as well as potentially helping the overweight.

How it Works

There is some prelimary research that shows that calorie reduction is helpful in reducing likelihood of age related diseases such as Heart disease, Hypertension, Stroke, Type 2 Diabetes and Alzheimer’s.

A hormone called IGF-1 puts the body in a state of “Go-Go” mode, where cells divide relatively quickly. If we limit IGF-1 (through protein and calorie restriction) we reduce our production of IGF-1. This means we our bodies are in a “Slow” state where cell division happens less frequency and DNA repair can occur more. This would reduce the chance of cancer.

Calorie reduction can be done in various ways-
- A long term (i.e >10 years) low calorie diet. The guy who had been on this diet, who was over 50, was tested for some of the main health factors and had a considerably lower risk of cancer (and other diseases) than Moseley who was of similar age.
- A diet where you must fast completely for four days per month. Moseley did this and even after one round of this some of the health factors showed a big decrease. Research had shown that the decrease was cumulative over time in other patients. But a three-day fast is very hard go through.
- A 5 plus 2 diet – where you eat totally normally for five days per week and have a low calorie (600 calories or less than a third of the normal amount) for the other two days. Again, Moseley did this diet for a few months and his risk factors had decreased by 50%.

It’s not total starvation either – one day you get to eat 500 to 600 calories (400 to 500 for women). And on the other day, the feast day, you get to eat whatever the hell you like. This diet has been shown to have most of the same benefits as the total three-day fast.
